Loachapoka Rural Merchants Records
Scope and Contents
This collection contains ledgers, daybooks, memorandum and cash books from Macon County (later Lee County) community of Loachapoka. Most items appear to be from L. T. Wimberly and Company General Store. Other items are labeled Brooks Carlisle, J. T. Bailey, and Cole and Webb. A post office cash book, kept by postmasters John Daly and Thomas D. Ligon (July 31, 1871 - October 22, 1875), is also included. This is a valuable source of information about the economic life of rural Alabama communities, as well as local genealogy.

Biographical / Historical
L. T. Wimberly and Co. was organized by L. T. Wimberly (b. 1858), as a general mercantile store in Loachopoka, Alabama ca. 1880's. Howell Webb and George P. Cole succeeded Wimberly as manager of the store. Brooks Carlisle operated a general store in the Loachapoka Trading Center, ca. 1904-1933. Loachapoka served as a trading center for Macon, Lee, and Tallapoosa counties from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century.
