Biographical / Historical
The Department of Industrial Engineering has changed names four times sense it was first created in 1928: the Department of Industrial Arts and Shops (1931); Department of Industrial Engineering and Shops (1944); Industrial Management (1964); Industrial Engineering (1996); Industrial and Systems Engineering. In the 1960s, the department underwent a transformation from a degree that focused on administration and management to having a heaver focus on analysis, operational system, and research with emphasis on mathematics. It was the Industrial Engineering program that incorporated Auburn’s first computer programming class.
