Scope and Contents
This collection includes the audiocassette and transcript of Wayne Flynt's interview with John V. Denson; a Civil War era letter from Tobias Edwards to John Meyers and a photograph of Caroline Elizabeth Drake Samford; papers written by Wayne Flynt about his students and their progress from his time as a professor at Auburn University; notes and papers from his time as a member of Auburn University committees and organizations such as the Auburn University Family Campaign, Committee on Outreach Assessment, and the Commission to Review Auburn University's Role in the Twenty-First Century; papers describing his work on the Encyclopedia of Alabama, as well as related magazine and newspaper articles; and correspondence, notes, and news concerning the forced resignation of Auburn University President Hanley Funderburk.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Wayne Flynt is professor emeritus of history at Auburn University. He was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi in 1940. He holds degrees from Howard College, now Samford University (A. B. 1961), and Florida State University (M.S. 1962, Ph.D. 1965). He taught history at Samford from 1965-1977, then joined the Auburn University History Department in 1977. He taught until his retirement in 2005, the same year he was inducted into the Communication Hall of Fame at the University of Alabama. He is editor-in-chief emeritus of the online Encyclopedia of Alabama and a co-creator of the resource. Flynt has authored many books on Alabama history, including the Pulitzer Prize-nominated “Poor But Proud: Alabama’s Poor Whites”. His books have won awards such as the Lillian Smith Award for Non-Fiction, the Alabama Library Association Award for Non-Fiction, the American Library Association's Outstanding Academic Book, and the James F. Sulzby, Jr. Book Award. His work focuses on religion, poverty, and how these ideas affect the American South.
