Biographical / Historical
Mart or "Lieutenant M." (assumedly Martin Link) wrote this diary for Mary Goodwin of Farmers Valley, Pennsylvania, from notes he took during his service with the 85th New York Regiment in the Civil War. He served in several ranks, moving from Sergeant Major to Captain and served in various positions, including orderly sergeant, adjutant, and company commander, until he mustered out at the war's end. Mart's last name is not listed in the diary, but research indicates that Mart was Martin Link (see Collection's contents). His relationship with Mary Goodwin is unknown.
