Scope and Contents

The Mahone Papers consist of a 72-page document written in Mahone's hand between 1890 and 1895 on the letterhead of a Washington D.C. hotel. Mahone reportedly prepared this document at the request of General James Longstreet. It provides Mahone's account of the several days in early April, 1865, leading up to General Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. A copy/transcript of the document is also included.

Biographical / Historical

William Mahone served in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War, eventually rising to the level of brigade commander. Following the war, he became active in Virginia politics.
