Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a seven-hour, tape-recorded interview with James Martin conducted by Dwayne Cox, Head of Auburn University's Special Collections and Archives, on May 7, 1996. The interview covers Martin's term as president of Auburn University. The portion of the interview dealing with Charles Curran's career at Auburn has been transcribed.

Biographical / Historical

James Everett Martin gained his bachelor's degree from Auburn University in 1954. He got an M.A. from North Carolina State University, and A Ph.D from Iowa State University. He was a professor, then appointed Dean of the Divison of Agriculture at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and President of Arkansas University before becoming President for the University of Arkansas System. He then served as President of Auburn University from 1984 to 1992, after which he retired. Auburn University's James E. Martin Aquatics Center is named after him.
