H.B. Bozeman Collection

Collection — Box: Short Collection 1, Folder: 1-9
Identifier: 0012

Scope and Contents

This small collection donated by Mr. Bozeman consists primarily of materials associated with H. B. Bozeman's efforts to obtain a historical marker for General Thomas S. Woodward in Winn Parish, Louisiana. Mr. Bozeman for many years wrote a column "Winn Parrish As I Have Known It" in the newspaper Winn Parish Enterprise and Winnfield News-American. In the column, he detailed his efforts to seek recognition of Gen. Woodward, who had resided in Winn Parish after leaving Alabama in the 1820s. Many of these columns are included in the clippings file. There are also copies of correspondence with Department of the Army, Speedy 0. Long, U.S. Congressman from Louisiana, and Thomas Belser, Archivist at Auburn University. There are also copies of letters to and from others. In addition there are a few other items of miscellaneous nature.

This small collection is mostly of value with regard to Thomas S. Woodward. Relatively little mention is made of Woodward in standard early historical works concerning Alabama. A collection of Woodward's letters was printed in 1859 in limited quantity, and was reprinted in 1939. These letters contain his memory of events of the early frontier period. A copy of the reprint is in the Auburn University Library, Special Collections.
