Scope and Contents
This accession includes a 104 page manuscript diary, August 1861 to June 1862, from his enlistment at Racine, Wisconsin, to St Louis and into enemy territory ("Am frigthened for first time...scared to death...")... marched to Fredericktown (Missouri), held in reserve for the battle, next day saw men burying the dead... the boys burned and plundred the town... he sees the wounded (Feb 17, 1862) and prisoners from the battle at Fort Donelson... sees gunboats... March 4th, his regiment started after Jeff Thompson (Confederate General chased 20 miles by their cavalry)... May 8, 1862, his regiment is in battle near Corinth, Mississippi...
