Historical Terminology
During much of the period covered by these records, the word “Negro” was a widely accepted term and was preferred by many Black Americans, including prominent scholars and civil rights leaders. Although the term gradually fell out of common usage beginning in the 1960s, it has been retained in this finding aid to preserve the terminology of the historical record.
