Scope and Contents

This accession contains a typed, unpublished manuscript by Richard E. Amacher entitled “From Moses to Montesquieu: Antislavery Rhetoric in Early America, 1688-1808” in its entirety. Many notes and edits have been penned in throughout the manuscript. The manuscript consists of a preface, eight chapters, an appendix, and a bibliography. Dr. Amacher examines persuasive works written by American authors on the subject of race-based slavery in this study. Specifically, he is interested in analyzing the arguments against slavery presented in such works and the persuasive tactics they employ. This accession also includes a few miscellaneous items including two handwritten pages of authors cited in the manuscript and a letter concerning a conference presentation.
