Accession 18-027 (Bulk Dates: 1860-1864)

 Accession — Container: 5 Boxes

Scope and Contents

This accession consists of documents and memorabilia preserved by descendants of the Cherry and Goldsby families. The bulk of the collection consists of 40 letters written home by Captain George W. Cherry during the American Civil War, describing life in the regiment, battle, asking after his family, and providing advice to his wife and children at home. Most of the letters are originals, but some are available only as transcriptions or quoted in publications. The collection also contains Cherry's masonic apron; certificates of title for property in Greenville, Alabama, dating to the mid-1800s; bills of sale for slaves; confederate bonds; two letters from Georgia politician Alexander Stephens; and correspondence from Josiah G. Parsons at Bunker Hill and Fredericksburg during the Civil War. Also present are newspaper clippings preserved by the families; medals, photographs and other memorabilia related to Thomas Mariner Jr. (III), who died in battle on Okinawa in World War II; and historical information collected by the current descendants of the families.
