Accession 19-064: Initial Deposit, 1864 - 2012, bulk: Bulk 1890 to 1935

 Accession
Identifier: 19-064

Scope and Contents

This accession contains correspondence, diaries of Dabney Hare from 1893-1898 and 1901, photographs, a 1903 wedding album, three books, a typescript of an 1897 biography by Alexander Bondurant, a newspaper clipping on the Hare residence by Milton Smith Osborne, and a copy of East Alabama Living including an article on Cliff and Dabney Hare published in 2012.

"The Bride's Book" illustrated wedding album contains letters, envelopes, a postcard of Maysville Presbyterian Church in Buckingham, Virginia, guest signatures, gift list, fabric swatches of gowns, and telegrams. There are no photographs in the book.

The following information was noted by the donor: the first mention of Cliff Hare in Dabney's diary is in the May 19, 1895 entry in the book covering 1893 to 1897 and the wedding album cites 6 March 1894 as the date of their first meeting. The two Civil War letters in this accession were saved with Dabney's diary because someone saw they were old and might be of value, but there is no known family connection between the authors of the letters (K.Thompson and N. W. Smith) and the Hare family. Clifford Hardie, author of "Shadows", is the son of Cliff and Dabney's eldest daughter, Emily Hare Hardie.
