This accession contains Dr. Joanna Davenport’s research in the life of Miss Eleonora Sears, a controversial Boston socialite ahead of her time. Miss Sears, born September 28, 1881 as the great-great granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson, broke cultural barriers associated with women in the early twentieth century, especially in athletics. Sears participated in an array of activities, such as baseball, driving, flying, football, golf, horses, squash, tennis, walking, and yachting, not only as a competitor, but also as a champion. Dr. Davenport estimated in her article “Eleonora Randolph Sears, A Pioneer in Women’s Sports,” Miss Sears earned 240 trophies, during her years of athletic competition. Eleonora Sears passed away March 26, 1968, but remains acknowledged as a significant contributor in the acceptance of women in athletics.
