Patrick Cather was born in Birmingham, AL, on May 12, 1947, to Bill and Virginia Cather. He is a book collector and dealer in his hometown.

Cather Publishing Company, and became an active collector of rare books and printed materials, focusing on Alabama and Southern history and culture.
In 1979 Cather and his partner, Bo Brown, founded Ex Libris, a used and antique book shop. Later renamed Cather and Brown Books, the business operated through the mid-1990s.
