Biographical / Historical

Patrick Cather was born in Birmingham, AL, on May 12, 1947, to Bill and Virginia Cather. He is a book collector and dealer in his hometown.

Cather was interested in blues music from an early age and sometimes played piano in Birmingham blues clubs. He eventually founded his own recording label, Vulkan Record Company.

Cather studied English at UAB and was the founding editor of the Kaleidoscope student newspaper with Melinda Hidle. He soon took over management of the family business, A. H. Cather Publishing Company, and became an active collector of rare books and printed materials, focusing on Alabama and Southern history and culture.

In 1979 Cather and his partner, Bo Brown, founded Ex Libris, a used and antique book shop. Later renamed Cather and Brown Books, the business operated through the mid-1990s.

Cather was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1991. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Birmingham Historical Society and also served on the board of directors for the Birmingham History Center.
