Scope and Contents
This accession consists mainly of materials collected by Sandra Newkirk in the course of her research for an unfinished book on the history of women's athletics at Auburn University. Included are a variety of Newkirk's administrative papers from 1966 to 1981, documenting her tenure as women's athletic director, intramural director, and women's volleyball coach at Auburn, as well as her involvement with the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport and the Alabama Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. These administrative papers contain correspondence, tournament programs, team rosters, and schedules and score sheets. The collection also includes press releases, newspaper clippings, and photographs relating to Auburn women's athletics from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, as well as Auburn women's sports media guides(mostly volleyball). Finally, the collection also contains papers doumenting Newkirk's involvement in selecting recipients of various academic awards and scholarships in the 1990s and early 2000s.
