Scope and Contents

This collection consists of departmental records of the Center of the Arts and Humanities at Auburn University from 1984 to 1998, organizational records of Phi Betta Kappa, research notes on the Second World War and correspondence received and sent by Allen Cronenberg from 1976 to 1998. Papers include materials on annual meetings of the Alabama Association of Historians from 1995 to 1998, the minutes of the Auburn University Scuba Club (a.k.a. Tigersharks) from 1976 to 1993, and miscellaneous subject files retained by Dr. Cronenberg.

Biographical / Historical

Allen T. Cronenberg was born in 1940 in North Carolina. He joined Auburn University’s Department of History in 1968 and is considered an expert on Alabama's history during World War II and the German U-Boat war in the Gulf of Mexico in 1942 and 1943. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his doctoral degree in history from Stanford University. Cronenberg is a founding member and incoming president of the Alabama Association of Historians. He has been a member of the University Honors Program committee, coordinated the World History Program and is a founding member of Phi Beta Kappa in the Auburn Community. In addition, he has been secretary of the General Faculty and University Senate. He was director of Auburn University’s Center for the Arts and Humanities at Pebble Hill from 1996 to 2004.
