Scope and Contents

This collection contains historical and genealogical material collected by the descendants of Charles Coleman Thach.

Included are wills from the Thach lineage, personal family letters and letters regarding genealogy, death notices and obituaries, newspaper clippings, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) membership applications, a calling card printing plate, lineage charts, census records, two books on Auburn history, receipts for sale of cemetery plots, certificates, and 118 photographs (prints and negatives) of family members, graves, and buildings.

Notable family members represented in this collection are Eliza "Lila" Lockhart Coleman Thach (1836-1918), Ellen Stanford Smith Thach (1867-1954), and Otis David Smith (1831-1905), Nathaniel Cortlandt Curtis, Jr. (1917-1997).

Biographical / Historical

The Thach family of Athens, Alabama, included Eliza Lockhart Coleman Thach (1826-1918), an Athens Female College (Athens State University) alumni and educator; her husband, Robert Henry Thach, Sr. (1837-1866); their children: Charles Coleman Thach, Sr. (1860-1921), the sixth president of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) between 1902 and 1920, and a professor of English and Political Economy, Richard Harman Thach (1865-1888), and Robert Henry Thach Jr. (1866-1924). The collection also includes information related to Ellen Stanford Smith Thach (1867-1954), wife of Charles Thach; her father, Otis David Smith (1831-1905) who was a teacher of mathematics and interim president at the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College (Auburn University); their children, Harry Smith Thach (1901-1984), Richard Hartwell Thach (1898-1967), Charles Coleman Thach, Jr. (1893-1966), and Elizabeth Lockhart Thach Curtis (1887-1970). Also included is information related to Elizabeth Curtis’s grandson, Nathaniel Cortlandt Curtis, Jr. (1917-1997), who compiled much of the genealogical materials in this collection.

This collection is in fragile condition with discoloration, water damage, rust damage, and holes in some of the documents.
