Biographical / Historical

First Baptist Church of Opelika was organized on October 29, 1859 with sixteen members. The first church building, known as "The Little White Church", was built for $1,500 in 1860 on the site of the present church. During the Civil War, it was used as a hospital. From 1873 to 1875, the church operated the Baptist Female College. In 1875, the Woman's Missionary Society (W.M.S.) was organized with Mrs. W. E. Hudmon as president. On November 25, 1881, the church was destroyed by fire. Until August 1885, services were held in the Opelika Episcopal Church. A new brick structure was enhanced by a new pipe organ in 1898. By 1911, the congregation had grown to 420 members. The entire church was remodeled inside and out in 1921, with a new electric organ installed. In February 1954, a new church sanctuary opened near the old one. During the 1960s and 70s, both sanctuaries were remodeled. In 1976, the membership was up to 2,158 people. The church continues to grow and is affliated with the Alabama Baptist Convention, the Tuskegee-Lee Baptist Association, and the Southern Baptist Convention.
