John Horry Dent Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains photocopies of twenty-one journals (1840-1891), nine account books (1856-1887) descriptive of 19th century agricultural and rural life in Alabama and Georgia, and the October 3, 1836 Conveyance and Trust Agreement that transferred control of the land and slaves inherited by Mary E. Harrison, wife of John Dent, to John Horry Dent.

Biographical / Historical
John Horry Dent was born in Newport, RI on August 5, 1815. He married Mary Elizabeth Morrison on December 30, 1835. Dent moved to Barbour County, Al in 1836. He bought a plantation called Good Hope on Cowikee Creek situated twenty-four miles from Eufaula, then known as Irwinton, and ten miles from Clayton. In 1841, he traded Good Hope for a plantation called True Blue six miles downstream on Cowikee Creek. In 1849, he sold True Blue and repurchased Good Hope. In 1866 he sold Good Hope and purchased Cottage Home in Floyd County, Georgia near Cave Spring. He died there on May 17, 1892.
