Scope and Contents

This collection consists of seven Civil War era letters. Six were written by William O. Holmes, and one was written by James Ammerman. Holmes' letter on April 4, 1865, describes the emotional impact of the fall of Richmond. There is also a small diary by an anonymous farmer from 1867.

Biographical / Historical

William O. Holmes served for the Union Army in the Signal Detachment, General Sheridan's Headquarters, Northern Viriginia. He was a member of the Regular Army and had not been discharged as of June 18,1865. There is one letter of January 7, 1865, from a soldier, James Ammerman, to Sara Jane Ammerman Hagenbuch. James Ammerman was recovering in a Union Army hospital when he wrote his letter. His location and unit affiliation are unknown.
