Biographical / Historical
The Catesby family has a long history of military service and office. Rogers ap Catesby Jones (ap being the Welsh equivalent "son of") attained brevets to Lieutenant Colonel for his service in the War 1812, brevets meaning no pay increase but the title and respect. He later was formally made Colonel and adjutant General in 1825 and served until his death in 1852. His service as adjutant General is the longest running in U.S. History. His son, Catesby Roger Jones, became famous for being the acting captain aboard the CSS Virginia, also known as the Merrimack, during the American Civil War.
