Biographical / Historical
Born in Snowdoun, Alabama, Dana Gatchell was raised in Selma, Alabama. Gatchell earned her B.S. (1923) and M.S. (1928) from Columbia Teacher's College in New York. She was a member of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute's Home Economics Department from 1923 until 1956. She became a full professor in 1935, then began serving as the Head Professor of Nutrition and Foods in the Home Economics Department in 1937. During her lifetime she wrote numerous cookbooks and was an avid collector of cookbooks, linens, and silver tea services. Gatchell died in 1960.
