Scope and Contents
This collection contains correspondence, pamphlets, convention programs, papers delivered at meetings of the Alabama Pharmaceutical Association and the Birmingham and Montgomery Retail Druggists Associations. Also includes newspaper clippings concerning national pharmacy issues and Legare's framed certificate of registration to practice pharmacy.

Biographical / Historical
Mrs. Lela Irwin Legare, of Montgomery (Ala.), was the first woman to graduate (1932) from Alabama Polytechnic Institute's (now Auburn University) four year pharmacy program. She worked for Durr Drug Company, of Montgomery (Ala.), until her retirement in 1960. As a long-time member of the Alabama Pharmaceutical Association, she advocted for increasing the presence of women within the profession. In 1974, the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy formally commended her for her research, collecting, writing, and speaking activities.
