Scope and Contents
This collection contains Civil War letters from Benjamin Mason to his wife, Nancy, recounting his experiences from his enlistment in 1862 to the end of the war. Also included are letters and documents from relatives and friends. For Accession 11-061, the original letters are in Box 1; photocopies of the letters are in Box 2.

Biographical / Historical
Benjamin Mason, a native of Tallassee, Alabama, enlisted in Company a, 1st Battalion, Hilliard's Legion in April, 1862. The legion was stationed in East Tennessee and Kentucky through the winter of 1864. In November, 1863, the battalion was recognized as the 59th and 60th Alabama Infantry Regiments, with Mason in Company F of the 60th. In March, 1864, the 60th was sent to Virginia, where it participated in the defense of Petersburg until the city fell in April, 1865.
