This collection contains Civil war letters pertaining to William T. Cooper who served in the Confederate army in the 12th Alabama Infantry.

The letters describe his thoughts at the beginning of the war with letters home, and towards the end his demoralization with the war thinking that Confederate President Jefferson Davis could end it if he wanted to.

This collection consists of correspondence, photographs, military documents, certificates, financial documents, rosters, and miscellaneous items from Lane's military and civilian activities, memoirs as well as the lives of various family members. The collection also includes drawings from Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama civil engineering students from the 1870s.

Scope and Contents The core of this collection is a set of forty-six letters written by various members of the Pearson and Johnson families to each other during the Civil War years and the years immediately before and after the war. Included are love letters between Jefferson Lafayette Pearson and Mary Abigail Johnson, letters from the soldiers in the family to their brothers and sisters and in-laws, and letters between the women in the two families on the home front during the war.
