Scope and Contents

Consists of records of the Alpine Baptist Church, a diary of Oliver Welch, and the scrapbooks of Samuel W. Welch on microfilm. The remainder of collection includes photocopied genealogies (1958) of the Darby, Welch and Mallory families, compiled by H. A. Darby; a paper (1942) on the Walker Reynolds' home, Mount Ida, by Margaret Reynolds Smith; a diary (1850-1860) of Rev. Oliver Welch; memorial tributes (1874) to Welch; and two scrapbooks (1900-1951) with clippings of poetry, obituaries and marriage notices of the Welch family, and clippings and correspondence on Dr. Samuel Wallace Welch's medical career and activites as Alabama state health officer. Partial memebership rosters and conference minutes (1832-1885) of Alpine Baptist Church; clippings (1872) on the church's new building dedication; and paper (1933) on the history of the Coosa River Baptist Association.

Biographical / Historical

Hugh Shepherd Darby, James Mallory, Rev. Oliver Welch, and Walker Reynolds all settled in Talladega County, Alabama, between 1832 and 1834. Alpine Baptist Church, in Talladega County, where Welch served as pastor, was founded in 1832. His descendent, Dr. Samuel Wallace Welch, was elected Alabama state health officer in 1917.
